JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 13-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was hit by a vehicle in Northwest Jacksonville on the way to school with his brother Wednesday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Family has identified him as Kameron Turner.
JSO's Sergeant Hungerford says the crash happened at approximately 8:38 a.m.
The driver was traveling in a Hyundai CR-V, eastbound in the 2400 block of Kings Road, when the car hit the boy, according to police. Hungerford says the teen's brother who is 14 years old was not hit, as both of them did not use the crosswalk at the intersection with Division Street.
"They were northbound going across the roadway," Hungerford said. "We believe that they had cut across the parking lot of the [The Sanctuary at Mount Calvary] church."
The driver who is a woman in her 60s, stopped at the scene following the crash and is cooperating with police; there's no indicators that she was impaired at the time it happened and has not been charged, according to Hungerford.
"Detectives have already mapped the scene and they'll be evaluating speeds to see if that was a contributing factor," Hungerford told First Coast News. "We will evaluate everything, take in totality the circumstances to see if there is culpability."
Hungerford also says the brother told JSO that he believes the woman was on her phone when the crash happened.
"There's a possibility that she was on the phone, but here again, you're allowed to use the phone in Florida, it's just depends on how you're using that phone," Hungerford said.
