JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 76-year-old woman was hit and killed in Jacksonville's Fort Caroline Shores area while attempting to help injured dogs Tuesday night, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office told First Coast News.
JSO's Sergeant Hungerford says the fatal crash happened at approximately 9 p.m. in the 14000 block of Mount Pleasant Road. He says two Pit Bulls were struck by an unknown vehicle on the road and that the woman's husband saw them in the center median.
While the woman was walking across the westbound lanes of the road from the north side to give aid to the dogs, police say she was struck by a 4-door sedan that was westbound in the inside lane of Mount Pleasant Road.
The woman was then taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to JSO. Her identity was not released by police.
Hungerford says the driver of the sedan stayed at the scene and is cooperating with detectives, as there are "no indicators of impairment."
The crash marked as the 36th traffic fatality in Duval County this year and the 9th fatality involving a pedestrian, JSO says.
