Jacksonville voters call for unity, weigh in on Trump assassination attempt

Jacksonville voters told First Coast News they want to see the country become more unified and hope a strong leader is elected in November's presidential election.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — With the presidential election only four months away, voters in Jacksonville tell First Coast News they want to see the country become more unified and are hoping a strong leader can be elected in November.

"I just want someone that’s gonna do good for the United States of America," said Paul Whaln.

Whaln identifies as a Republican and he knows who he is voting for in this upcoming election.

"I know without a doubt Trump, yeah Trump without a doubt," he said.

Following the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania, many across the nation are calling for unity within the country, like Ramon Day, a member of the Democratic Executive Committee.

"As President Biden has said we believe in ballots not bullets," said Day. "We’re neighbors but we’re not enemies. We just have differences of opinion. No matter what your opinion is go vote, that’s how we settle things in our country."

Emily Barber is a 21-year-old voting for the first time this year.

"We have to make change for everybody that’s our age and the ones younger than us," said Barber.

Barber and her boyfriend William Brulte believe the young vote will make a difference.

"Just the previous generation vote is going to lean the same way it’s been leaning the whole time, so with the new generation of people it can go a different way," said Brulte.

Regardless of what party these voters align with, they all are seeking similar qualities in our leader for the next four years.

"We need someone that can be firmer in decision making and be confident in what they know and believe," said Brulte.

"I would like to see a lot more unity and more of a backing for the middle and lower class people," said Brie Snowden.

"We used to stand for real American values, and I don’t know where that went these last 15 years but hopefully us as a nation, we can stand on those fundamental principles again," said Snowden.
