JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Among the 50 most populated cities in the country across "five key metrics," Jacksonville is ranked 14th on the list of cities with the worst drivers in a study done by Forbes Advisor, with another Florida city ranking in the top 10.
According to the study, Jacksonville is ranked only behind Albuquerque, New Mexico; Memphis, Tennessee; Detroit, Tucson, Arizona; and Kansas City for the city with the most number of fatal car accidents per 100,000 residents.
Moreover, Jacksonville is also ranked as the sixth-worst city in America for the number of people killed in fatal crashes - 16.23 per 100,000 residents.
Tampa sits at No. 10 on the ranking, as the city has the eighth highest total number of fatal car accidents and ninth highest number of people killed in fatal crashes (also calculated per 100,000 residents).
The following is the other three metrics Forbes used in the study, as it relates to the River City:
- Number of fatal car accidents involving a drunk driver (blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels of 0.08+) per 100,000 city residents: 4.49.
- Number of fatal car accidents involving a distracted driver per 100,000 city residents: 0.72.
- Number of fatal car accidents involving speeding per 100,000 city residents: 0.89.
Forbes Advisor says for all metrics, it took a five-year average, using data from 2017 to 2021; data was collected from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the U.S. Census Bureau.
The city population data used by Forbes Advisor came from the 2022 Census.
