JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — "Even if they'd survived, they would have been terrified," said Mike Merrill with Florida Urgent Rescue or F.U.R., a Jacksonville nonprofit.
Merrill and his crew drove to counties under a Hurricane Warning before Helene hit to take 93 dogs and cats out of mostly open-air shelters.
Merrill said chicken wire can't prevent a dangerous blow to dogs and cats from hurricane winds.
Now, 19 of those dogs are available for fostering or adoption at the Pet Paradise Jacksonville airport location.
Merrill said one of those animals is Spanky, an adorable black and white dog.
