Jacksonville mother still has no answers nearly six years after son's disappearance and death

Nearly six years after Melissa Jackson's son, Corbin Johnson's disappearance and death, she's saying her faith and community of supportive moms are helping her cope.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Melissa Jackson still has no answers nearly six years after her son, Corbin Johnson disappeared in 2018 and his remains were found in 2019.

Jackson told First Coast News all she can do is take it one day at a time, but through her faith and the community of support she's found, she said she's able to cope with losing her son.

"When I go to bed, I think about Corbin," said Jackson. "When I wake up, I think about Corbin. I think if I think about it too long, it hurts."

Corbin disappeared in July 2018 and exactly one year later, his remains were found in the woods in Northwest Jacksonville.

Nearly six years later and still no answers as to what happened to her son, Jackson is still grieving.

"It’s one day at a time, one second at a time, one minute, one hour, it’s just I take my days as they come," said Jackson.

However, she's found a community of other moms in the same shoes as her.

"We share our kids with each other, our pain with each other, our tears and our laughter and its not easy, this is not easy, grief is not," Jackson said. "They may have taken our sons, our daughters, but they can’t take our memories. They cant take the memories I have with him, I have so many. So, as long as you can hold onto those memories, your child will continue to live."

Holding onto the memories is what Jackson plans to continue doing as she's planning to celebrate what would have been Corbin's 24th birthday next month.

"He was tall, handsome, just so sweet," Jackson told First Coast News. "He loved to dress, he was definitely a momma’s boy, and he was my baby. You don’t know what you take from a mother when you take their child, it’s like a part of me is missing. It’s like an empty part of me is missing."

According to Jackson, there are no new updates on her son's case at this time.
