As peak hurricane season nears, Jacksonville home inspector highlights documenting damage

Filing a claim with an insurance adjuster can take weeks or months after a powerful storm.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The peak of hurricane season is quickly approaching and being prepared for the next major storm is key for homeowners to get the help they need, especially if there is damage.

First Coast News reached out to Adam Hanneman, a home inspector with Home Team Inspection Services. He's in charge of the Jacksonville region.

He highlighted the importance of documenting everything.

Hanneman suggested taking pictures and videos of homes before and after property damage. Hanneman said being prepared to have all the necessary information can help expedite the process of claiming a file. He mentioned waiting for an insurance adjuster can take weeks or even months.

"It's always good to look at maintenance items on your home such as trimming trees away from the roof structure just to prevent any damage that could happen," Hannemen said. "It's especially not a bad idea if you have an aging roof to get it inspected or have someone look at it."

Hannemen listed a few common mistakes he's noticed homeowners make: waiting too long to file a claim, not addressing damages promptly and fixing whatever is damaged before documenting it.

He said it is paramount to be the first people in line after a major storm does damage to a property.

"The sooner you give the insurance company a call, I think the better. Everything will get backed up as more people get in that line," Hanneman said.

Hanneman said homeowners should write down everything and know the policy number for a smoother process.
