JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A controversial workforce housing development is headed to Biscayne Boulevard on Jacksonville's Northside.
The 108-unit complex was approved 11-8 by Jacksonville City Council Tuesday night, despite dozens of neighbors speaking against the project.
"Somebody referenced they’re building in San Marco and they are, but nothing like this," one neighbor said while holding up a rendering of the development.
Neighbors argue the development looks more like a motel, than workforce housing.
“Why do we deserve to have something that looks like that in our communities if you know that you wouldn’t want it in your communities," another neighbor said.
The developer said the design was unique and will be built well, using steel instead of wood.
Council members who voted in favor of the project said workforce housing is needed in every area of Jacksonville and
District councilmember, Reggie Gaffney Jr., had some strong comments for council members who voted for the project.
"This is not a need for the district it doesn’t enhance the district the architect design the whole nine yards. I’m taking notes, I hear a lot of you guys say the planning commission said that the planning department recommend that. I’m taking notes," Gaffney Jr. said.
