Jacksonville apartment fire still active, but only one engine on scene

Early Monday morning, there were 115 firefighters on scene. The presence of fire rescue personnel is dwindling, with JFRD still monitoring for collapse.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — On the third day of the fire at the RISE Doro apartments in Downtown Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department presence has dwindled to one ladder, one engine and one fire chief on site.

The fire is not completely out yet, according to Captain Eric Prosswimmer with JFRD. The scene is still considered active -- it has been ongoing since 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

The building, in development since 2019, was set to officially open March 1, but some families were going to move in this upcoming weekend.

The frame of the $60 million building will now have to be demolished, according to Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan. The concrete foundation of the building will be tested and may be able to remain intact.

Businesses surrounding RISE will be shut down until the risk of collapse is gone.

Intuition Ale Works, Manifest Distilling and the offices on A. Phillip Randolph Boulevard are all in the collapse zone and will be closed.

The Icemen are playing twice this week and those games will not be canceled. However, the parking garage near Vystar will be closed as it is also in the collapse zone.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
