JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Thursday night a vigil was held to remember the Jacksonville Air Force veteran who died after being injured in a hit-and-run.
At the busy intersection of Lenox Avenue and Normandy, family and friends of Robbie Roberts gather at each corner of the intersection wearing her favorite color and remembering her life gone too soon.
"It's still a shock but you would never expect this to happen to her," said Renee Williams, Roberts' sister. "Tonight, was four corner prayer in honor of my sister it was cover each corner so no one ever has to stand at a corner and this tragedy happened."
The 53-year-old Jacksonville Air Force veteran was injured after being hit by two cars on October 22 while on a walk.
Roberts was on life support for a week, she died from her injures Tuesday night.
"We’re trying to pull together as a family, and do what we need to do to get the word out to see if anybody can remember anything from that morning. We know it’s a few days later, but something now that we’re bringing more light to her story," said Williams.
The second driver who hit Roberts stayed on the scene, while police said the first driver drove off and is still out there.
"This is directly to the driver: you did not get out, you drove off and you left her on the side of the road," said Williams. "You left a helpless life, and you left her there for dead, and now you’re driving around, and you have no heart and no compassion for her family, you are inhumane to me."
With Robbie's 54th birthday on Sunday, her family said they plan on continuing to celebrate her by keeping her memory alive.
"She was a blissful, infectious, butterfly full of life…that was Robbie," said Williams.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office tells us they're continuing to investigate this incident. They ask the community to help identify the driver and the vehicle, they think is a Nissan Juke or a similar car.
