JSO: Man dies in custody after 'unknown medical episode' and is agency's 4th inmate death of the year

Isaiah Mitchell, 24, died Tuesday, police said. He had been in custody since November.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man died in Jacksonville Sheriff's Office custody Tuesday, the agency announced. It's the fourth inmate death this year.

At approximately 5 p.m., members of JSO's Cold Case Unit responded to a local hospital after the death of 24-year-old inmate Isaiah Mitchell while in custody.

Mitchell was originally taken into custody Nov. 19, 2023, on possession of controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, giving false name or identification of law enforcement, resisting officer without violence and violation of probation for possession of cocaine.

He was in custody at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility and suffered an unknown medical episode Tuesday afternoon, police said. Mitchell was taken to a nearby hospital by Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department for emergency medical treatment and died shortly after arriving at the hospital, the agency release continued.

Detectives continue their investigation with interviews and the Medical Examiner’s Office determination of death will follow Mitchell's autopsy.

Gregory Norton, Kiara Reid and Leroy Beckett have also died in JSO custody this year. The investigation into Mitchell's death is ongoing.
