'Innocent bystander': Mother says her son was killed when Uber passenger was targeted

Bryant Grund was working temporarily as an Uber driver in Jacksonville to pay the bills, his mother says. He was close to moving to Georgia for a new job.

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. — First Coast News has learned one of two men killed in a shooting on Jacksonville's Northside on October 6 is 31-year-old Bryant Grund, according to his mother. 

Grund's mother, Heidi Doyle says he was working temporarily as an Uber driver to pay the bills.

"He was a really good guy with a great heart, and he really tried to provide a good service no matter what he did, and he really was our breadwinner," Bryant Grund's mother Heidi Doyle said. 

Doyle says Grund was a professional truck driver for more than a decade, before recently switching careers be more present for his family. Doyle says she, Grund and his two siblings recently relocated to Jacksonville and were staying at a hotel until Grund started his new job. They were planning to move to Georgia soon.

"He was blessed with a job offer at Samsonite, not too far from here. And really looking forward to having some fun driving a forklift because he is just a fun loving guy," Doyle said. 

She says she didn't get to say goodbye to him before he left for his shift with Uber earlier this month. On Friday, October 6, police were called to the 7400 block of Kylan Drive West in response to reported gunfire at about 11:45 p.m. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says "two adult males" who were found dead inside a vehicle.

"He was driving a young man who was to meet up with a young lady at the location. When he drove up to the location, he was met with gunfire, and it wasn't necessarily directed towards him, it was directed towards the passenger. Bryant was just the innocent bystander," Doyle said. 

In a statement to First Coast News, an Uber spokesperson said: “Our hearts ache for the victims of this horrific attack, and their loved ones continue to be in our thoughts. We are supporting law enforcement with their investigation and hope those responsible are brought to justice swiftly."

Doyle says her son will be missed. "It won't be the same without him. He was a rock-solid guy. He really did represent truth well, and he really did love big."

At the time, police said the relationship between the two men was unknown.
