By now, you're probably aware that you need to have a supply of emergency water and food ahead of Hurricane Dorian.
However, when talking about hurricane preparedness, it's easy for many essentials to be overlooked.
Below is a list of five items commonly forgotten when preparing your hurricane kit.
1. Your ID
Pack it in a waterproof pouch or Ziploc bag. It's important when registering for help. During evacuations, authorities keep records of people who are moved or rescued. It's easier to receive help when you can demonstrate who you are.
2. Cash
Experts say you should carry at least $250, and be sure it is relatively small bills. After a disaster, it's rare anyone will be able to accept your credit cards, but you'll need money for food, fuel and more.
3. Emergency Whistle
You'll likely need to signal rescue workers in case of an emergency without expending precious energy and losing your voice. An emergency whistle can be useful.
4. Eyeglasses or contacts
If you wear prescription or reading glasses, it's important to pack them so you will be able to see clearly. Also, if you wear contacts, don't forget to pack your contact lens solution and an extra pair.
5. Bright-colored bag
Hurricane "go bags" should be bright colored (yellow or orange) to help emergency workers spot you.
Although you should pack other items, according to the American Red Cross, these are items that are often overlooked.
