BRUNSWICK, Ga. — People living in the city of Brunswick spent Sunday evening preparing for Hurricane Debby. The Glynn County Public Works Department provided free sand for people to bag at locations throughout the county.
Glenn Queener would rather be safe than sorry as he shoveled sand into bags Sunday. He was one of dozens of people who filled their cars with sandbags getting ready for the rain and wind to come.
“It’s what we do. We just get together, make sure the house and animals are all cared for, make sure where we work is cared for. And just ride it out," Queener said.
People came together to help each other shovel and carry bags to their cars. Sally Cedars decided to come out and get more sandbags after a tarp blew off the roof of her clinic.
"We already had a tarp that was up there we had some sandbags, and as you can see we don’t even have any strong winds yet," Cedars said.
At the Brunswick Landing Maringa, boaters were tying up their lines and securing their vessels. Dan Strickland, the assistant dock master, said they have been helping boat owners prepare since Thursday.
"You just over prepare honestly, so you put extra lines, more fenders, and make sure everything is secure," Strickland said.
The Glynn County Emergency Management Agency also provided updates throughout the day urging people to heed their warnings and prepare. They recommend people avoid making unnecessary trips and stock up on food and supplies.
"We just stock up on some water and peanut butter and roll with it," Cedars said.
The City of Brunswick is also anticipating having to close some roads ahead of the storm.
