High school metal detectors in Duval County will be for occasional use

According to DCPS, "the metal detector [is] to be used solely for mitigating significant threat (bomb, shooting or other types) to high schools when the threat cannot be resolved prior to students ... arriving at school."

Duval County Public Schools announced metal detectors for high schools will only be used under certain circumstances.

The school district is receiving $3.9 million in funding from the Department of Education and moving forward with plans to place two walk-through metal detectors at each of their 21 high schools.

According to DCPS, "the metal detector [is] to be used solely for mitigating significant threat (bomb, shooting or other types) to high schools when the threat cannot be resolved prior to students ... arriving at school."

The mobile detectors will also be used at functions expecting a large attendance like football games, said Micheal Edwards, director of the Duval County School Police Department.

The security devices will be out of sight when not in use.

DCPS reports 59 threat assessments took place at Duval County high schools in the 2016-2017 school year; 33 threats have been investigated so far in 2018.
