JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man suffered severe injuries after being set on fire Tuesday night in Downtown Jacksonville, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Officers responded to the corner of West Union Street and North Main Street at about 9:56 p.m. for reports of a man being set on fire, according to the JSO.
By the time officers arrived on the scene, people were already helping to extinguish the fire on the man, JSO said.
Police believe there was "some type of flammable material" placed on him before the fire started. They did not identify the material but said it was a liquid.
First responders took the man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was later flown by helicopter to another hospital in Gainesville, police said.
Police were able to identify a suspect on video and later apprehended him at another location, police said. He was interviewed by detectives, though it is not known if he has been charged.
"We have investigators still putting the issue together," Lt. K.T. Anderson said during an early Wednesday morning briefing.
At this time, detectives believe both the victim and the suspect are homeless, police said.
JSO's Homicide Unit and Violent Crimes Unit are investigating the incident.
