JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Habitat for Humanity, also known as HabiJax, will break ground on five new homes for veterans and families Wednesday.
The ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at a neighborhood on Jacksonville's Northwest side on Smart & Redpoll Avenue.
HabiJax has built more than 2,000 homes for Jacksonville families. The future homes will be dedicated to those who served the country including families who have military ties.
HabiJax said the soon-to-be homeowners will have stability and a fresh start. The focus on veterans is part of an initiative known as Heroes Build. Kevin Collison, HabiJax's director of communications marketing, said veterans post-9/11 have a more difficult time finding affordable housing than their non-military counter parts.
"We were determined to do something about that," Collison said. "It's wonderful to be part of the solution."
According to Habitat for Humanity, more than 25 percent of Florida's one million veterans are cost burdened by housing.
With Heroes Build, their homes are brand new with interest rates below VA rates, with no closing costs.
HabiJax said the homes will be built as three-bed, two-bath houses.
