Gun found in backpack on student's wheelchair at Mandarin Oaks Elementary

The gun was found loaded inside the student's backpack in the school's Exceptional Special Education unit, the school's principal said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A loaded gun was found in the backpack of a student in the Exceptional Special Education Unit at Mandarin Oaks Elementary in Jacksonville on Monday, Principal Leigh Butterfield told parents in an email.

The backpack was hanging on a student's wheelchair, Butterfield said. When a teacher tried to help remove the backpack, she noticed it was unusually heavy.

She then opened the backpack and saw that it contained a loaded gun. The gun was holstered in one of the outer pockets of the backpack, according to the email.

Butterfield said law enforcement responded and determined that the gun belonged to the student's parent.

Police are working with the State Attorney's Office to determine the next steps in this investigation.

All students are safe and no one was injured.
