JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. — High School students in Jacksonville Beach spent Saturday morning at the Mission House handing out plates of food and delivering necessities to the homeless community.
The group of students are part of the Prep Club Club, a new addition to the Prep Club which has been a part of Beaches Habitat for Humanity since 2001. One student, Ireland Johnson, believes Thanksgiving is more than just eating a meal with family.
“There’s so many members of our community that are overlooked. People effected with homelessness, they’re often not thought about in the general population," Ireland Johnson, a Club Prep Prep member, said.
Hot out the ovens, the students and representatives from State Farm Insurance, served up meats, sides and desserts during a Thanksgiving dinner for residents living at the Mission House at the Habitat for Humanity Beaches location.
The Mission House Project is being funded through a State Farm student action grant in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity International. The Mission house works year-around to provide those experiencing homelessness with food, clothing, medical attention, and support.
“It means a lot to this community, I’m a Jacksonville beach resident so it’s nice to be able to see how it helps this community. We drive around here a lot and we see people who are less fortunate than us so definitely with the holidays coming up it’s nice to be able to show them that they’re also loved and cared for," Jayson Judy, a State Farm Insurance agent, said.
The group also gave out wellness kits filled with hygiene products, clothing, and other items all part of their goal to serve those in need.
“We’re all part of the beach community together, we’re all here to help," Johnson said.
