BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Emergency officials said Friday afternoon that no one was injured following a train derailment in Brunswick.
However, Glynn County Fire Rescue remained on the scene at Ninth Street and Newcastle Street dealing with a diesel leak, a social media post said.
Glynn County Emergency Management said it expected it to take several hours for the area to reopen.
The traffic impacted is from Norwich to Fourth Street while Newcastle Street is shut down entirely.
In a statement Friday night, officials said the derailment resulted from the train’s locomotive striking a portable derailleur that was placed on the tracks in order to protect crews that were working on the track further south.
“It’s all about the training and the willingness to work together ... that makes this possible,” said Leanza. “We are grateful to the Glynn County Police Department, Glynn County Fire Rescue, Brunswick’s Police and Fire Departments and the Jekyll Island Authority for their quick and efficient responses.”
