FSCJ needs help naming its new mascot

The community has until Sept. 27 to submit a name suggestion.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Florida State College of Jacksonville introduced its new mascot Tuesday, and now the school needs help giving it a name.

Students, staff and community members caught a first glimpse of the new manta ray mascot costume while gathering at the FSCJ South Campus Gymnasium, commonly known as "The Reef." The unveiling also fell on "World Manta Day."

FSCJ announced the manta ray as the school's new mascot during the 2024 Commencement Ceremony after it received the most votes from the community.

“The initial search for our new mascot reached viral proportions on campus and throughout the community through the voting process. We knew this was going to be big, but we didn’t anticipate it would become this huge,” said FSCJ President John Avendano, “We hope to keep this momentum going as we look to name our new friend.”

The school is accepting name suggestions for the mascot through Sept. 27. From there, the school will narrow down a list for public voting and announce the final name before the end of the year.

Anyone can submit a name suggestion at fscj.edu/mascot.
