A Columbia County Sheriff's deputy saved a baby after it fell into a pool and was unresponsive Thursday, authorities say.

Sergeant Howard Bulthuis was called to Troy Street in unincorporated Columbia County after the baby fell in the pool and was reportedly unresponsive.

The 22-month-old girl was not breathing, so Bulthuis performed CPR and the baby began breathing and spitting up water. Emergency crews responded and continued to treat the toddler.

Authorities had the 22-month-old flown to UF Shands in Gainesville where she is in stable condition.

Detectives and agents with the Department of Children and Families are investigating the incident.
