Florida could be due for northern lights encore next week

Floridians may have another chance to see the northern lights, deemed as a once-in-a-generation event, as soon as next week.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Floridians may have another chance to see the northern lights, deemed as a once-in-a-generation event, as soon as next week.

Florida was graced by the northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, for the first time in decades on May 10. The sunspot that was responsible will be facing Earth again on June 6.

This rare occurrence marked the first time since March of 1989 that residents had the opportunity to view the spectacle of the Aurora Borealis in the northern sky. Dozens of First Coast News weather watchers shared stunning photographs capturing this rare event.

It is not confirmed whether the northern lights will be visible from Florida yet, but conditions will be similar to earlier this month.
