JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Airplanes had to cut through water on the runways at the Fort Lauderdale Airport.
Historic rainfall causing a shutdown in and around the airport with drivers and passengers stranded in vehicles.
According to the National Weather Service, more than 25 inches of rain fell in just 24 hours.
Right now, the airport is set to remain closed until Monday morning at 9.
The heavy rain in South Florida along with storms on the First Coast is also impacting our airport in Jacksonville.
Passengers say the flights being grounded in South Florida due to flooding have impacted their flights in Jacksonville.
One passenger says he’s been at the Jacksonville International Airport since 9AM Thursday and has to wait until Friday to get to Memphis.
At one point, JAX had 44 delays and three cancelations.
“I have checked whether my flight was delayed three or four times today and made sure I got here in time so if there was a cancelation, I could make other arrangements but I will see,” said Kara Walker, passenger.
Walker is like many passengers at Jacksonville International Airport today checking the flight board to make sure their flights are on time.
Kenneth Bohanna got to the airport early Thursday morning for his flight to Memphis… but now he has to spend the night in Jacksonville.
“It’s a frustrating situation but I do understand when we got these weather delays it’s nothing you can do about them,” said Bohanna.
If you have a flight Friday, check with the airline before heading to the airport.
