TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A Flagler-Palm Coast High student received applause and congratulations after singing the National Anthem twice to begin the state Legislature session in Tallahassee.

K’imani Gerven-McCoy, 15, was invited by Speaker Paul Renner, whose district lies in Flagler County. (McCoy begins at the 5:00 mark).

McCoy was accompanied by her mother, Tahlia, and Jeffrey Reaves, the district’s Director of Teaching and Learning, when she traveled to Tallahassee Tuesday morning. One of the highlights of her day was meeting Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The Flagler contingent were able to get back in time to avoid the inclement weather, a press release said.

“(She) did an amazing job. She did a phenomenal job and it was a really proud moment for Flagler Schools to have one of our own be honored in such a way. So congratulations to her and her family," Flagler County School Board Chair Will Furry said at a workshop Tuesday afternoon.

“To watch it, and see him afterwards beaming with so much pride in the great job that she did was super-special Superintendent LaShakia Moore added. "I watched it both times, and you will see (K’imani perform) again.”
