Fire rekindles at RISE Doro apartment building amid demolition

A spokesperson with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department described the flames as a "small rekindle"

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Small flames have rekindled inside the RISE Doro apartments, less than one week after a massive fire destroyed the multi-million dollar apartment complex on Sunday.

A spokesperson with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department described the flames as a "small rekindle."

First Coast News crews on the scene saw first responders shooting water at one corner of the building.

Patrons at That Bar At The Arena said JFRD crews came inside the bar and told everyone to leave. The bar is located near the entrance of the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.

Employee Caitlin Cooper said they were in the middle of a private event - a birthday party of about 50 people for a police officer with JSO.

"Obviously, with it being right next door, the Doro building being burnt was the topic of conversation throughout the day. Then, it lit back on fire, so it became the topic of conversation once again," said Cooper.

First Coast News has reached out to RISE to see how this fire will affect demolition.

A spokesperson with RISE confirmed demolition on the building began Friday morning.

Right now, there is still no official cause of the fire.

RISE provided the following update on Friday afternoon regarding the demolition:

"The demolition and debris removal has begun at the RISE Doro site in downtown Jacksonville. RISE remains grateful to our partners who are working to accomplish these goals as safely and quickly as possible and is thankful to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, the City of Jacksonville, and the Florida Bureau of Fire, Arson, and Explosives for their diligent work to ensure a safe and efficient process as we move forward."

Intuition Ale Works just announced on social media that the company was notified that the initial demolition phase was "extraordinarily successful" and was told the taproom could reopen on Sunday.

It is unclear if Intuition's reopening will now be affected by the rekindling at the building on Saturday night.

First Coast News spoke with nearby businesses, including Manifest Distilling which is nearing one week without business.

“It's devastating,” said Manifest Distilling Vice President Jim Webb. “And it just makes me sad. Every day a little bit more of the reality seeps in.”

Webb said when Manifest Distilling reopens, they and Intuition plan to hold a party to thank first responders.
