NEPTUNE BEACH, Fla. — A 15-year-old bicyclist was killed in a crash in Neptune Beach Friday night, Florida Highway Patrol told First Coast News Saturday morning.
According to FHP's crash report, at 10:10 p.m., a sedan driven by a 34-year-old Jacksonville woman was traveling north on Penman Road, while the bicyclist, a boy from Neptune Beach, was "traveling east on Florida Boulevard, across the crosswalk."
Troopers said the front right side of the woman's sedan struck the side of the bicycle, as the boy was pronounced dead at Wolfson Children's Hospital.
Neptune Beach Police Chief Michael Key Jr. said in a Saturday morning press conference held at the police department that officers deployed life-saving measures by using an AED and performing CPR on the teen.
Key added that the teen was riding his bike home after leaving the Fletcher High School homecoming football game.
"Another child who was with the victim was also nearby, but was uninjured," said Key.
The police chief said the child is a girl that is in the "approximate age range of the victim."
Key also said the identities of those involved in the incident will not be released and specific details of the crash are still being investigated.
"The driver and several witnesses who stopped are cooperating with authorities," Key said. "His parents and family are simply devastated. I sat with them last night in their living room and there are simply no words to express the lost of a child. They ask for privacy and for their sake in our community, I would ask that you give that to them."
Key ended the press conference with saying, "the driver has not been charged, but if there are forthcoming, pending charges, the charges will be brought forward by the Florida Highway Patrol."
