Fernandina Beach city manager resigns after drunken video, gets $50k severance

The city commissioner accepted Ty Ross's resignation Tuesday after he crashed his bike while allegedly drunk, caught on video by police.

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — The Fernandina Beach City Manager who resigned Saturday will be paid $50,733 in severance, the City Commission announced at a meeting Tuesday.

Ty Ross had only been employed as the city manager for a few months when bodycam video of an encounter with police led to calls for his resignation. The video was released in early December, but depicted an incident that happened in October.

In the video, he is shown rolling around in the grass after crashing his bicycle. In the video, a bystander says, "I thought he got hit, he was laying in the grass. I went up and talked to him, he's either drunk or stoned or both."

In the video, Ross admits he had been out drinking, but the responding officer did not have him complete a breathalyzer test or a citation. Officers ended up driving him home.

The $50,733 severance covers six weeks pay, re-location expenses and health benefits.

Ross has seven days to revoke his resignation. If he does not revoke his resignation, after next Tuesday, his resignation will be final.

The city named an interim city manager, Charles George, who was previously deputy city manager.
