A bullet went through the window of a home on Mt. Herman St. Sunday night, hitting a 2-year-old boy in the leg.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — One week after a 2-year-old was shot while sitting inside his home in Durkeeville, the family says they plan on relocating.

The toddler's aunt told First Coast News on Monday that the 2-year-old is out of the hospital and is doing okay after he was shot in the leg while watching cartoons in his home last week.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said officers responded to the residence after a ShotSpotter alerted them of shots fired just after 9 p.m. on Dec. 10. Police said the bullets came from outside the home.

The toddler's aunt said the home is no longer liveable after it was riddled with bullets, and added they plan to relocate.

She said the family had just moved to Jacksonville and had no idea why the home would be a target.

Neighbors said they believe the shooter was standing on the walking trail next to the home when shots rang out. The trail is also on the same side of the home where a window was broken by gunfire.

One neighbor described the shooting and said it sounded like a warzone.

"I kept hearing a whole lot of shooting, like pow pow pow,” said Tony, who lives in an apartment near the home. “I wanted to check, but I was afraid to come outside."

Tony added he's concerned about an uptick in violence and worries for the future of the neighborhood.

"People can't sit in their homes and watch TV without getting shot," Tony said.

Police are still investigating and no suspects have been identified.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call police at 904-630-0500 or CrimeStoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
