JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Viewers reports of tremors, buildings shaking and noise that sounded like an explosion were coming in for much of Friday morning to First Coast News.

The reports have been coming from places like Middleburg, Ponte Vedra Beach, and even St. Augustine. Some have even questioned whether there was an earthquake in the area.

Kim Ruth Hall posted to our Facebook page: "Loud explosion heard in Nocatee. Does anyone know what it was? My house shook and my windows sounded like they would break!"

The United States Geological Survey tells First Coast News it wasn't an earthquake. It's much more likely that what you may have heard or felt comes courtesy of the United States Marines.

Naval Station Mayport spokesman Bill Austin tells First Coast News that Marines out of the Savannah, Georgia area are doing training and their overflights could be what is rattling houses and fraying nerves.

They are training in F-18 aircraft and the loud noises were likely sonic booms, according to Chuck Mulligan with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.
