Duval County inmate awaiting trial for child porn charges dies in hospital, police say

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says Scott Stormes had been taken to the hospital on "several occasions" since his arrest in October 2022.

DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. — A Duval County Jail inmate died Monday night following a "lengthy stay" at a local hospital, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office told First Coast News on Tuesday.

Shortly after midnight Tuesday, JSO says members of its Cold Case Unit were notified of the death of Scott Stormes, 66.

Police say Stormes died while receiving medical treatment at the hospital. Additionally, the sheriff's office says Stormes had been there since early June and had been taken to the hospital on "several occasions" since his arrest in October 2022.

Stormes's arrest happened on Oct. 20, 2022, according to JSO, as he was charged with possession of photographs/sexual performance by a child and was awaiting trial at the time of his death.

"Stormes reportedly suffered from several ongoing medical issues and investigators have not located any use of force or physical incidents involving other inmates at this time," JSO said in a news release. "The cause of death is currently listed as undetermined awaiting a final Medical Examiner’s report."
