Drug bust prompts Neptune Beach Police to warn parents to sort through Halloween candy

The Neptune Beach Police Department wants parents to sort through their kids' candy on Halloween.

Halloween is about a week away, but it's what could be in some candy that Neptune Beach Police officers want parents to watch out for.

The warning comes after more than 500 grams of gummy-style soft candy laced with THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, was busted during a traffic stop.

According to Commander Michael Key with the department, officers don't know where or if the suspects were planning to distribute the candy. He said he wants the traffic stop to serve as an example.

"Our message, what we really, really want to get out is nothing other than simply an awareness to potential parents that otherwise wouldn’t have any idea that this exists in our society," Key said, "that there’s a gummy bear their child could ingest and it could potentially be laced with THC."

Key said the candy was similar to Sour Patch Kids. He advised parents to inspect their children's candy when they get home from trick-or-treating.

"If your child has a big, big bag of candy, spread that bag of candy out," he said. "Look through it and if you see anything that isn’t in an originally manufactured, sealed bag throw it out. If in doubt, throw it out."

Key also advised using glow sticks or flashlights on Halloween to increase visibility, and slow down if you're driving to avoid striking trick-or-treaters.
