JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Dozens of Southside neighbors are cleaning up the mess after their car windows were smashed.
The break-ins happened early Tuesday morning at the Auburn Glen and Antlers Apartments off Southside Boulevard.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said it was called to the Antlers Apartments around 4 a.m. Tuesday.
Police said a witness saw a person pulling on vehicle door handles. JSO said 26 cars were burglarized and it is still looking for a suspect.
“This is the big one, around 35, 36 cars have been broken,” one neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous said.
The neighbor said he has lived at Antlers Apartments for 8 years and burglaries have happened in the past.
“Security is the main concern, since it is saying that it's a gated community," the neighbor said.
He said the gates at Antlers are always open and wants his building to be more mindful of security.
Which is what neighbors at the nearby Auburn Glen Apartments want at their own complex.
Brian Aviles lives at Auburn Glen and says his car window was smashed early Tuesday morning as well.
“The entire windshield was just shoved in. I don't know if it was punched with a rock or maybe a piece of metal,” Aviles said.
First Coast News saw several other cars with smashed windows and others with trash bags covering broken windows.
Aviles said he's only lived at Auburn Glen for a short time but has heard about burglaries in the past.
“I would like for them to put in more security, maybe even just someone to round about every now and again or even just cameras or under buildings,” he said.
First Coast News did speak with an Auburn Glen manager who said the complex does not have security cameras.
He said he will bring up adding cameras to upper management.
First Coast News asked JSO if the two incidents at Auburn Glen and Antlers Apartments are related. We are waiting for a response.
