JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—The City of Jacksonville has unveiled new renderings of their plan to fix the Liberty Street/Coastline Drive collapse downtown on the Northbank.
Part of Liberty Street and Coastline Drive near the Hyatt just east of the Jacksonville Landing collapsed in February of last year and is still causing headaches for the city.
Last summer, $17 million was given over from the city to repair the stretch of road, but officials believe it will cost $31 million to completely repair the area.
As of now, the city has allocated money for the repairs in installments up to 2018. $6 million is expected to be added to the repair fund in 2017 and the remaining $8 million should be added the following year.
Tia Ford, spokesperson for the City of Jacksonville, said that construction could begin as early as the end of the year.
A construction contract award to Superior Construction Company Southeast, LLC allows for 630 days for the project to be completed. That includes time for design, permitting and construction, Ford said.
The construction plans call for the removal of the large parking lot between The Plaza Condominiums and the Hyatt.
Originally, the city's assessment called for $37 million to repair the Liberty Street collapse, but after receiving bids from construction companies and refining associated costs, Ford said the city was able to bring the projected costs down to $31 million.
