8-year-old boy dies in fire on Jacksonville's Westside

His grandfather sustained multiple injuries trying to get back inside. Authorities said he attempted to grab the boy through a window, but the fire was too intense.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An eight-year-old boy died in a fire on Jacksonville's Westside Thursday, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The fire happened in the 6900 block of Beaver Street West, near the intersection with Sharman Street.

The boy's grandfather started cooking chicken on the stove top and stepped outside for a moment. A grease fire began and spread, engulfing the house. 

His grandfather sustained multiple injuries trying to get back inside. Authorities said he attempted to grab the boy through a window, but the fire was too intense.

Jacksonville Fire and Rescue got to the home only three minutes after the call came in at 4:12 p.m. according to Capt. Eric Prosswimmer. 

He also said a firefighter was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Florida Highway Patrol was dispatched to the scene at 4:37 p.m., according to their website.

JSO's Homicide Unit is investigating, along with the Bureau of Fire, Arsons, and Explosives Investigations.
