Polk County crash kills Jacksonville mother, injures 2 kids with driver suspected to be under the influence

Polk County deputies said the driver was speeding and showed signs of impairment when she veered off the road and crashed.

DAVENPORT, Fla. — A single-vehicle crash killed a Jacksonville mother and injured her two children near Davenport on Friday night.

A 2024 Nissan sedan veered off the North Ridge Trail just before 8 p.m. while speeding and went over a guardrail, through a fence and hit a tree, Polk County Sheriff's deputies said.

Alicia Carmona, a 39-year-old passenger from Jacksonville, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Her two children, a 15-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy, were injured and taken to the hospital. Deputies said they are in stable condition.

The driver was 36-year-old Tiffany Alexander West from Orlando who deputies said displayed "signs of impairment." She was transported to the hospital with facial fractures and a sample of her blood was obtained for testing.

The road was closed for about five hours while detectives cleared the scene but has since reopened. The crash is under investigation, and criminal charges are expected, deputies said.
