Deputies say a Clay County woman's son placed needles in Halloween candy as part of a hoax and could face charges of false allegations after costing the Clay County Sheriff's Office hours of wasted time.
Police were called to the 1800 block of Farm Way Friday where a woman said her son found a needle in the candy they got while trick-or-treating on Halloween.
The candy bar was confiscated and the boy was asked if he had planted the needle. The boy said no, according to the police report.
The deputy, along with the boy and his mother, rode around the neighborhood they claimed to have received the candy from.
After stopping by close to 30 homes in about four hours, deputies say the boy confessed to placing the needle inside the candy bar.
The police report says the four hours wasted add up to about $128.
Another woman said her 14-year-old stepdaughter snapped a Crunch bar in half and found a needle in the middle of it after trick-or-treating in Orange Park
On Facebook, a woman said her niece bit into a Kit-Kat bar and found a needle inside.
The post was reported to CCSO, who said they were investigating. The post has since been removed.
Deputies have since learned that both allegations were false. The investigation in Orange Park cost deputies $48 worth of time.
"At this time, all three cases have been unfounded," said a statement from CCSO. "We are currently working with the State Attorney’s Office concerning charges to come for these false allegations, which caused great community concern."
