Explosion causes massive warehouse fire in Downtown Brunswick

Residents were encouraged to avoid the downtown area near the port side.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Multiple County fire departments responded to a large fire in the downtown Brunswick area Sunday night, according to the Glynn County Emergency Management Agency.

The fire happened shortly before 8 p.m. near 225 Newcastle Street and crews worked to extinguish the fire well into the morning.

The Brunswick Fire Department told First Coast News the fire was caused by a small explosion at a warehouse. The warehouse was full of wood pellets, the fire department said.

No injuries were reported.

This is not the first time a warehouse filled with wood fuel pellets has caught fire in the area. In 2015, a fire destroyed two huge warehouses firefighters halted it before it reached a third, according to the Florida Times-Union.
