JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Columbia High School was on lockdown Thursday morning after a student reported seeing an armed person on campus. Officials have since determined the weapon was a JROTC rifle.
The reports stemmed from a JROTC student on the drill team, officials said. The student was seen carrying a non-functioning drill rifle which is used for "ceremonial purposes", the Columbia County School District said.
The student took the rifle home to practice and was bringing it back to school on Thursday morning. Another student saw the rifle and reported their concern. School officials will be addressing JROTC procedures to avoid alarming situations in the future.
The campus has been secured and school will resume normal operations, according to officials.
