MIDDLEBURG, Fla. — First responders with Clay County Fire Rescue say two people were involved in a mobile home fire in Middleburg Thursday morning. One person died.
The fire occurred at 3442 Sandy Oak Rd. just after 8:30 a.m. The fire department says AT&T's nationwide outage had no affect on 911 communications with reporting the fire.
Anna Waugerman lives across the street from where the fire happened. She said she heard a woman yelling and saw a lot of smoke and flames coming from the home.
"The first ones I saw were coming out of that little window, I guess it was the kitchen window. I mean it was horrific. Then the smoke started billowing up...huge, huge smoke. And then I started seeing flames on the back side of the house, too," Waugmeran told First Coast News.
Waugerman said she did not know the victim personally, and did not think someone was supposed to be living there. She said she is heartbroken for the family.
“I’m just so sorry people feel like they have to live like that…they never asked for help. I would’ve helped them," Waugerman said.
The State Fire Marshal's Office is now investigating the cause of the fire.
