JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Thousands of military members will spend this Christmas away from home, and at Naval Station Mayport, a team of culinary specialists woke up early Christmas morning to make sure those living on base had a hot Christmas meal this holiday.
“It’s one big happy family here at Navy Station Mayport," Brian Binder, the Commanding officer for the Mayport base, said.
It’s a home away from home for active duty and retired service members.
“We’re here to make sure that all sailors have a place to come and have a wholesome meal and dine with family, because we all are on family in the navy," Stewart Spencer, head at the Food Sever Center, said.
This is Stewart Spencer’s third Christmas at Mayport Base. As a head chef he’s in charge of severing about 200 to 300 people.
It took 8 turkeys, 15 prime ribs, and a ton of sides to prepare for the feast. The hard work reflected in the smiles of those sitting around the table.
“It’s the team behind me that did phenomenal work over the last couple days and gave up their Christmas morning to make sure they can serve others. And they do it with a huge thanks because they know how important it is… What better way to celebrate Christmas than right here at the Oasis Gally," Binder said.
