Police: 2-year-old child dead after being found in pond on Jacksonville's Southside

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says patrol officers swam in the pond to retrieve the child out before first responders with JFRD arrived at the scene.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 2-year-old child was pronounced dead at a local hospital Tuesday night after being found in a pond on Jacksonville's Southside, according to the sheriff's office.

Sergeant Reed with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said patrol officers responded to Bennett Creek Apartments around 8:30 p.m. in reference to a report of the child missing.

The sheriff's office said officers then "swam out to retrieve the child and immediately began life-saving measures" until first responders with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department arrived.

JSO doesn't currently know how the child found their way into the pond, but an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
