9-1-1 call reveals chaotic moments after JSO K-9 got loose neighborhood, attacked three people

“Hang on, hang on honey," one of the victims says in the audio. The police report describes "chucks of meat" hanging from one of the victim's legs after the attack.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — 9-1-1 audio released Tuesday night reveals the moments after a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office police service dog got loose and bit three people who lived in a home in the 10500 block of Forest Boulevard South.

The incident happened Saturday afternoon. JSO officials say the dog was at a handler's house when it broke out of a kennel and escaped into the neighborhood.

“Hang on, hang on honey," audio heard from one of the victims.

According to the police report, a male neighbor, heard on the 9-1-1 call, was assisting with finding the dog's owner and brought the dog to his home. It was there his roommate came out of a shed and the dog attacked the roommate.

The neighbor and his wife tried to help and got bit in the process.

According to the police report, the husband then grabbed a large knife and stabbed the dog in the neck, before he and his wife escaped from shed and closed the door, locking the dog inside and the housemate also inside, trapped in a separate.

The husband can be heard describing the dog’s location to 9-1-1 dispatch.

“Oh Please… And you said he’s locked up… He’s locked up yes ma’am.. Okay and is she completely alert…Yes she’s screaming, she’s hurt.”

Dispatch can be heard telling the man to find a towel to stop the bleeding, the man says he will take off his shirt and use that.

The police report for this incident described the injuries each victim sustained. The husband had bites on his thigh and arm.

His wife is described as having bandages wrapped around her shins and ankles. JFRD, responding officials said in the report “chunks of meat” were missing near her ankles and that she had sustained the most severe injuries.

The roommate had injuries to his left leg.

First Coast News was able to get in contact with both male victims Tuesday, they are in contact with a lawyer and are not speaking with the media at this time. However, the husband does say his wife is still in the hospital recovering.

JSO says whether the K-9 returns to work in full capacity, depends on the injuries sustained and his ability to fully recover following surgery.

First Coast News also asked JSO more about the dog’s history and if they were investigating why the dog attacked without being commanded to do so. Officials say the circumstances surrounding the incident continue to be administratively reviewed.
