JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Tokyo Sakura in the Regency Square Mall can’t be open all the time.
So, they set up a wall to try to protect their storefront from people jumping over the counter.
However, they still have issues, caught on surveillance camera where folks are stealing things, particularly their display drinks.
“We don’t care for the drinks," said Employee Kharyn Phongvila. "She [the business owner] is just having a problem feeling safe in her own place.”
Phongvila says nearly every Sunday their security cameras capture someone jumping over the counter to swipe their display drinks.
“Most of these drinks are expired," said Phongvila. "Because they’re displays. I don’t know if they’re drinking it or selling it.”
The team has started taking their display drinks down when they're closed and have built a protection wall.
Things escalated when their camera captured a man jumping the counter several hours before the mall opened one morning in December.
“Early morning," said Phongvila. "Trying to cook on our grill.”
Phongvila says they’ve told security about the issue several times, including last weekend when it happened again while their cameras were down.
“They were like, oh the security wasn’t there," said Phongvila. "He was doing his routine inspection around the mall. I don’t know what to say to them because it happens every Sunday.”
The mall manager couldn't be reached by phone and the mall office was closed throughout the day Tuesday.
A public relations firm representing the mall acknowledged a request for comment, however, said they couldn't meet the day of deadline for a response.
“We’re not trying to bring this mall down," said Phongvila. "We’re doing good business over here. If this keeps happening, I don’t know if we feel safe enough to stay here.”
