JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Durham School Services is hosting a job fair until Friday and they are looking to hire at least 50 bus drivers for the next school year.
Duval County Public Schools have been experiencing bus driver shortages. In the beginning of the school year, some delays took over an hour and now bus drivers have to take on extra routes. Employers are still looking to have bus drivers in Jacksonville's Arlington and Beaches areas.
Durham School Services said it does not matter if one is new or experienced, there is never enough school bus drivers. Officials said applicants need to bring their driver's license to start the process.
Dina Thaverne, who's applying to be a bus driver, said her initial job as an Uber Driver wasn't fulfilling.
"I've been doing Uber and it's not giving," Thaverne said. "So, I said I need to take it up a step. Also, I do have my CDL."
Thaverne acknowledged how if she were to get the job, she's essentially taking pressure off the school system and parents who rely on their student to take the school bus. Thaverne mentioned how she relied on bus drivers to take her daughter to school.
If hired, she'll be paying it forward.
"This (applying for the job) kind of landed on my lap," she said.
The job fair is from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., located at: 1205 Monument Road, Suite #301.
