JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office remembered Jacksonville's first African-American police chief Saturday as part of Black History Month.
Chief Charles Scriven joined the Jacksonville Police Department back in 1955 as a patrolman. He later went on to serve as a sergeant and lieutenant, according to JSO.
Soon Scriven was appointed to chief of a new division known as the Community Relations division. The division was meant to "maintain closer lines of communication between the black community and the Sheriff's Office," JSO said.
The appointment of Scriven marked the first time an African-American was given the rank of police chief in Jacksonville.
