DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Jacksonville District has awarded a $32.4 million contract for renourishment of "approximately 10 miles of the Duval Co. Atlantic shoreline," according to a news release.

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co., LLC of Houston, Texas, will take on the project as the restoration will "renourish critically eroded beach within the municipalities of Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and Jacksonville Beach, extending from the St. Johns River to the Duval-St. Johns Co. line," the release states. Furthermore, the USACE says the project includes construction of both a dune and beach berm with sand sourced from a federally administered offshore borrow area.

Beach tilling, vibration control and monitoring, environmental species monitoring and turbidity monitoring will also be done for the project, according to the release, as operations will begin "after the start of the new year." No specific start date was provided in the release but, USACE says USACE Jacksonville will advise the public of the start and progress of the renourishment through its social media channels.

The USACE says the project will be 100 percent federally funded through "Flood and Coastal Emergencies monies."
