Science is now weaponizing mosquitoes -- against themselves. On Tuesday, Wolbachia-infected male mosquitoes will be released in St. Augustine from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This virus does not affect humans, however, it will help to dwindle the mosquito population, particularly the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes which spread diseases like Zika and dengue fever.
The Orlando Sentinel reported a similar mosquito release in Miami to help control the mosquito population. These virus-infected bugs combat the population by mating with wild female mosquitos and inhibiting them to reproduce.
If the project succeeds, the mosquito population will dwindle which is good for reducing mosquito-borne illnesses and also sitting out on the front porch on a humid night.
