JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Are teachers cuts coming at Duval County Public Schools?
Wednesday night, State Representative, Angie Nixon, posted on X, saying the district would be making what she called "massive" teacher cuts.
Nixon told First Coast New a teacher notified her of the eliminations.
Duval Teachers United said it's also heard cuts are coming.
The union representing DCPS teachers says the cuts will impact employees at district locations and in individual schools.
DTU President, Tammie Brooks-Evans, said she is hearing 11% of district positions and 6% of school posts could be cut.
“It does look like it's going to be pretty deep," Brooks-Evans said.
She said district positions include employees at DCPS headquarters and other satellite locations.
School positions include jobs at individual schools, like teachers.
Brooks-Evans said the district plans to reassign employees to open positions but said the employee's previous positions would be cut.
“My concern with these types of cuts is what will happen to the work that needs to be done, the work we need to have done at the district level, the work that we need for working with our children having the right people in place," Brooks-Evans said.
Duval County Public School board chair, Darryl Willie told First Coast News cuts are common every budget cycle. But he said no number has been set because the board is still working through the budget.
Brooks-Evans said she wants the school board to be transparent during the process.
“As they are making these shifts and changes, it is something that is extremely important to us that we have transparency from the district, what exactly is happening with this process," Brooks-Evans said.
First Coast News reached out to DCPS to ask if cuts are expected and why they need to be made. DCPS said it is looking into the matter and will get back to us when it has more information.
