'Appropriate consequences' to take place after Garden City Elementary student sprayed pepper spray

The school's principal says no students were directly sprayed with the pepper spray but, told parents that the spray did cause two students to experience discomfort.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — "Appropriate consequences" are set to follow the actions of a Garden City Elementary School student after the principal says the student sprayed pepper spray on the bus on the way to the school Wednesday morning.

In a communication message sent to parents of students at the school, Garden City Elementary School Principal Ashley Miro says the incident happened on bus No. 777. Although Miro says no students were directly sprayed with the pepper spray, she told parents that the spray did cause two students to experience discomfort as the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department was contacted.

"Thankfully, the students were okay and did not require medical attention," Miro said in the message to parents. "A student was in possession of the prohibited item, shared it with a friend, and sprayed the mist onto a window."

Miro says because the bus driver was close to the school at the time of the incident, "we were able to quickly get everyone off the bus."

The principal says that direct contact was made with the parents of the students affected, as well as with the parents of the students responsible for the incident.

"We are treating this as a disciplinary matter," Miro said to parents. "While I am disappointed to report this incident, this is a great opportunity to remind you to check your child’s backpack each day and monitor what they are bringing to school. By doing so, you greatly assist in keeping our school, students, and staff safe."
